The origins of pawn shops have their roots in Ancient China about 3,000 years ago. In the West, pawn-broking existed in the Ancient Greek and Roman Empires.

Pawn shops have existed in Malaysia since year 1871, when the Pawnbrokers Ordinance was introduced by the British to regulate the business, and subsequently governed by the Pawnbrokers Act 1972.

The Pawnbrokers Act 1972 was enacted to ensure that the rights of the borrower are protected. The legal obligations of licensed pawn shops when dealing with customers include the use of proper paperwork / records and fair collection methods.
